After our tour at the Louvre several of us went to Montmartre. Montmartre is a hill (the butte Montmartre) which gives its name to the surrounding district. Montmartre is primarily known for the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré Cœur on its summit and the nightclub district below. In the mid-1800s artists came to inhabit Montmartre and by the end of the century it became one of the principal artistic centers of Paris.
The Sacré-Cœur Basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, which is the highest point in the city.
The butte Montmartre is 130 metres high and provides quite a view of Paris.
The Moulin Rouge is downhill and to the southwest of the summit in the red-light district of Pigalle.
The Basilica of the Sacré Cœur can be seen a block from our hotel by looking down this street.
